portrait of the artist as a young dog

2003 marked the fiftieth anniversary of the death of Dylan Thomas and in celebration of his work we created a theatrical journey through his writings, in particular his short stories, with a young people's audience in mind.

Portrait was a simple, straightforward staging of a number of Thomas' most well known stories, many of which explore his vibrant memories of childhood and adolescence in his native Wales. The stories were linked by excerpts from his own writings about the craft of writing and his own love for words, creating a picture of the writer emerging from his boyhood.

The production was simple and innovative, and could be played anywhere with the minimum of set and props, and as such was a highly accessible production for young people, as well as a powerful experience of literature and storytelling through live theatre.

Such was the success of the production on its tour round schools that it was decided to perform it in the Emlyn Williams Theatre in January 2004, followed by a highly successful tour round Wales in February 2004.

Comments

"What a wonderful advertisement for theatre, drama and the writing of Dylan Thomas."

Blessed Edward Jones HS

" I was abolutely bowled over by the whole thing. The cast, the performances (all great) the music, the set.. We all get too wrapped up in our own little lives sometimes. It takes something like last night to remind us all a little of our own childhood, memories and humanity."

Graham Wood
